Retail Banks Spend on BI
to Reach USD$9bn by 2012
A new report by independent market
analyst, "BI in Retail Banking", predicts spend by retail banking
institutions on business intelligence (BI) IT in North America, Europe, the
Middle East and Asia-Pacific, will reach USD$9 billion by 2012, up from
USD$5.6 billion in 2006. According to the report, the combination of
compliance requirements, a competitive business environment, the sub-prime
credit crunch and the need for stronger management will drive retail banks
investment in BI software. Given the sector's growth of IT budgets devoted
to BI, many vendors from diverse backgrounds, such as reporting, analytics,
data
management and operations, have rushed to claim their stake by
adapting their definition of BI to fit their offering. To read

Use of
business intelligence does not match the hype
The manner in which companies are using business
intelligence (BI) technology does not exactly match the picture painted by
vendors and other industry experts. That’s the conclusion from a survey of
more than 1,900 BI users and consultants conducted by the Business
Application Research Center (BARC), a software industry analyst firm based
in Germany. To read complete article click

Valuing
Business Intelligence
Whether considering a new business intelligence
solution, creating dashboards or adding analytics, you wouldn’t be alone in
questioning the value created by these tools. Business Intelligence vendors
promote the benefits and advantages of their tools, highlight the
weaknesses of their competitors, but seldom quantify the value they create.
You’ve probably read industry trends for business intelligence that promote
its value but rarely describe how the value is created. In this paper I
provide a methodology for deriving how business intelligence creates value
based on business needs. To read complete article click

Objects & Cognos customers get License Replacement
The three former independent BI players have fallen
like dominos this year, aligning themselves with application/database vendors
and trading market heft for independence. This obviously presents a great
opportunity for remaining independent players to capture the sizable
segment of customers who prefer best-of-breed tools versus an all-in-one
stack pushed by aggressive account teams selling everything from servers
and databases to applications and services. To read complete article click

With reference to my earlier post Key Performance
Indicators KPI - A puzzle solved, few of the readers asked me to throw some
more light on how KPIs could be related to KRAs (Key Result Areas) of the
management thereby enabling KPIs to be a more precise snapshot of the
organization. In this article I shall highlight some of the key points as
to how the KPI can be used in context with business functions. To
